256 grays

256 grays refers to when the computer uses 8-bits of information per pixel and shades of gray from black to white are being stored or displayed.

8 bits can store 256 unique values from 0 to 255 and so an 8-bit grayscale image will contain pixels that can be one of 0 to 255.
