- Color Management System
A means of controlling color reproduction based on independent calibration of input and output devices and custom or automated "gamut mapping" between devices. CMS components typically include software applications (such as i1Match or ProfileMaker), system-level utilities (such as Apple's ColorSync) which utilize CMM's and standardized device description formats such as ICC "profiles".
- History
In 1993, the largest manufacturers of operating systems, application programs and peripheral devices for the publishing industry established the International Color Consortium (ICC) whose mission was to develop and standardize an open, non-proprietary, and platform-independent architecture for a Color Management System (CMS). The idea was to ensure that all color data generated in compliance with the ICC Specifications could automatically be color adjusted in any system environment.
