Print Preview and Soft-Proofing

This Tip shows you how to set up the worksheet CTP to follow the same workflow you would use to print through a profile, and then shows how the reverse direction of the profile (the proofing direction) looks as you soft-proof through your monitor profile. This is a very useful tool to verify that a device profile is working well in both directions. Also includes ideas for how to view images in the worksheet.

Pushing numbers through a Profile (click)

Here is another way to simulate printing, useful for those who are looking for numbers or are starting with a color list.

How do I know if this target is color managed? (click)

Finding the 100% yellow patch

In order for a printer profile to work properly, it needs to be created with a target that gets printed without any color management (without any use of profiles) in the process.

Certain color patches can indicate whether a target is color managed or not. While it is relatively easy to identify these key color patches in a target that is laid out "visually" - it is much harder to do this with a target that has the colors "scrambled." This tip shows how to locate these patches quickly and easily using ColorThink Pro.

Vectors Showing Different Rendering Intents in Grapher

Vectors of a color list.

This is a simple way to visualize what a printer profile will do to a color list or image, by showing the change using vectors in the 3D Grapher.

How do I find out how far the colors have moved, transforming from one profile to another? (click)

Choosing colors to sample

"I need to have quantifiable data, such as delta E differences."

This procedure can be done with either a picture, a portion of a picture, sampled colors from an image, or a color list you make up yourself.

My ColorCast profile is not recognized by the Windows driver (click)

example of typical error in Windows driver

ColorThink Pro produces ColorCast profiles that appear to work well in programs such as PhotoShop but fail when used in Windows device drivers.

This note describes the details of how to add a final step in the creation process to patch the profile

Find the differences between two measurements (click)

Measuretool3.jpg

I want to compare DeltaE's between two measurement files, to see what differences there are between the two measurements. How can I do this with ColorThink Pro?

This is one of the easier tasks you can perform using the ColorThink Pro worksheet. In addition, you can view the resulting delta E differences as they show up on the page, or by grouping the worst offenders together.

Find the differences between two 7-color profiles (click)

Comparing two profiles (7 - color)

This is a little more complicated. I want to get a report on average dE, max dE, etc. comparing two "n-color" profiles. I don't have the measurement files anymore. Can ColorThink Pro give me quantifiable data?

Yes, it can. This procedure will extract device and measurement data from the profile tag table, and run a report providing all the useful metrics.

Which Pantone colors are out of gamut for this printer?(click)

I want to create a list of blues which we can use in our designs which we can count on being in gamut for the various printers we use. How can I tell which colors in this color list are in gamut (or which are out of gamut) for this profile?

Bring your color list into the Worksheet, and arrange the color columns in a different ordering. The Worksheet working in conjunction with the Grapher will make it easier to identify which colors are in gamut.

How to compare deltaE of color lists.

How to compare deltaE of color lists

This is link to a pdf compiled by Andrew Rodney which illustrates in great detail how to use ColorThink Pro to compare different color lists:

Using a profile to change my Lab values (click)

Using the Worksheet to convert a Lab color list through a profile.

I have a list of colors defined in Lab. How can I see what a profile will do to these colors, and save a list of the new Lab values?

How to graph large images (click)

This procedure describes how to reduce a large image for easy graphing.

My image takes too long to load in the grapher. What's the recommended way to shrink the file without losing its needed color range data?

Here is the method CHROMiX recommends if you want to be most efficient about reducing an image file size, while still preserving all the perceptible colors of the original image.

Using Device Link profiles in the Worksheet and Grapher (click)

Device link profiles are direct connections between two device spaces. As such, they don’t have a “gamut” and cannot be graphed in a 3D grapher like the one in ColorThink. However, using this tip you can see the results of using a device link profile in a workflow, and you can graph the behavior of a device link profile in the Grapher.

Fine Tune a Profile using Custom Colors

This shows how to use the Worksheet to sample colors in an image, then use those colors to fill out a profiling target using these colors.(click)

Opening images / profiles automatically upon startup

Creating the AutoOpenFolder in Windows

If you are using ColorThink Pro for testing, or in an automated way, there is a (previously) undocumented feature that allows you to open up certain files every time you open ColorThink Pro.

  1. In the same folder that your ColorThink Pro app or .exe (executable) resides: Create a folder called "AutoOpenFolder".
  2. Place in this folder any files - lists, images, profiles, etc that you wish to be opened automatically.
  3. The next time ColorThink Pro opens, these files will open as well.

A profile will open into the Profile Inspector, a color list or an image will open into the Worksheet.

Show the AutoOpenFolder section in the ColorThink Pro Manual
