One of the many functions of the the Client program includes driving measurement instruments that can be used to measure reflective color targets.

The ISO 12647-7 control strip and P2P25 targets are built into the Client and are always available. For "one-off" measurements, select "Open..." from the target menu in the measurement window to open MeasureTool and ColorPort targets for single-target measurements. To import a target reference file so that it is always available from the target list, follow the instructions below:

Importing a custom target into the Client

details of the Client information pane

This explains how to setup the Client to use a target that has been created in ColorPort, MeasureTool, i1Profiler, or Barbieri Chart Generator.

It is as easy as:

  1. Finding the target's reference file,
  2. Copying the reference file, and
  3. Pasting it into the correct folder where the Maxwell Client can use it.

In addition to the built-in targets that the Client reads, you can also have the Client read most targets created by the more popular target creation software packages. Currently, the Client supports targets created by:

There are some exceptions:
  • Targets with incomplete rows or columns are not supported at this time
  • Some targets from ColorPort include extra columns of black patches (i1Pro) . They are not supported at this time.
  • Non-iSis i1Profiler targets can be used if they are saved using the ProfileMaker CGATS format.
  • The Client does not support i1Profiler targets made for the iSis spectrophotometer. X-Rite does not supply the iSis chart definition information in this software. It is recommended that the user instead use MeasureTool to make iSis targets.

NEW!
The Client now supports multi-page targets.

Finding the Reference

Example of ColorPort program

ColorPort

Colorport has been discontinued by Xrite, but Maxwell still supports these targets.

http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?Action=support&ID=719

Create a target in the normal manner. When you click the Save Target... button, you are allowed to choose the name and location in which to store the target image.

Finding the reference file for this target is not so obvious.

For Windows go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\ColorPort_Resources\refs
and look in the rgb or cmyk folder as necessary for an .xml file with your target's name.

For Macs go to:

User > Documents > ColorPort_Resources > refs
and look in the rgb or cmyk folder as necessary for an .xml file with your target's name.

MeasureTool

Example of MeasureTool program

Targets made using the MeasureTool module of the ProfileMaker suite of programs can also be used. MeasureTool is part of the GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker suite. It can be downloaded for from from the Xrite website:

http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?Action=support&ID=757

MeasureTool includes a "Testchart Generator" which requires a properly activated dongle in order to make testcharts. However, if you do not have a dongle to unlock the Testchart Generator, you can still make use of a wide variety of standard targets in the support files that come with ProfileMaker.

On a Windows computer you would find them here:

C:/Program Files/ProfileMaker

On a Mac you would find them here:

Applications > ProfileMaker Pro

With either platform, look in the Testcharts folder for the actual image files to print.

Look in the Reference Files folder for the corresponding reference files.

Barbieri (Chart Generator)

Detail of Chart Generator interface

Maxwell supports targets made by Barbieri's Chart Generator software for use with the LFP and the Spectropad instruments.

Create a chart in the normal way using the Chart Generator software.

Chart Generator outputs a zipped file, and opens up a window identifying where it is in the folder structure. Copy that zipped file and paste it into the appropriate folder in the Client folder structure.

Copy this Reference

Right-click the .xml file (for ColorPort) or .txt file (for MeasureTool) or .zip file (for Barbieri) and choose "copy".

Paste it

The easiest way to get your reference file into the correct place for the Client to find it, is to:

Your target will now be visible the next time you click on a target drop down box when working with your printers or devices.

Measuring your target

Click on the Device

Click on the device that printed your target.

Click on the Measure button

Follow instructions

Follow the instructions given in the measurement window for:

Measure the target in the manner given.

While measuring, the colored patches are filled in with measured color as the reading proceeds. The upper left half of the measured patch represents the color aim, and the bottom right half represents the measured result. Red and yellow tick marks in the bottom right corner of patches are an indication that this patch measurement has exceeded a metric. In order for tick marks to appear:

Example of red, yellow and white ticks in measurement result window.

Red tick marks mean that this patch has failed the metric for Maximum delta E, beyond the upper failure level. Yellow tick marks show up for patches that exceed the upper "warning" level. It is possible that white tick marks may appear. If a tick mark is white this indicates that this patch was not included in the color aim for the track. The fact that it shows up in the measurement means that this patch IS included in the target definition file loaded by the Client app.

MemoryScan

MemoryScan

For instruments requiring positioning (i1IO, LFP) MemoryScan is available to make repetitive jobs easier.

With MemoryScan, a target's position on the scanning table can be memorized for rapid reuse. A separate memory is available for each target definition. Position a target on the scanning table in the same position as before - heavy tape or markers are helpful to ensure target position is repeatable - then 1-click measuring saves tons of time. For example, an i1 IO with MemoryScan makes a compelling proof verification tool.

Target is finished

When the target is finished, it will:

HELPFUL HINT: You can also save an i1Pro target by clicking on the Spectrophotometer button after the measurement is completed.

If you wish, you can click on the "Devices" hotfolder and verify that your measurement file was uploaded to Maxwell.

NEW!

Multi-page targets

Example of a 3-page target

The Client now supports multi-page targets.

Scanning with multi-page targets
Page completion markers

As each page is completed, a Scan Complete marker will appear on the page and the Measure window will select the next un-scanned page.

AutoScan and Barcodes in Maxwell Client

Barcodes for AutoScan when used with the iSis scanner can now include page numbers. The MD03 barcode format can only be used with Maxwell Client v5.5 or later.

When scanning multi-page AutoScan targets, pages can be scanned in any order and selecting the correct page will happen automatically.

Alternative "Operator" mode

Typical operator mode function

For those who need a streamlined workflow, we offer the "Operator" mode which contains only the vital information needed for an operator to quickly upload regular measurements.

It is possible to "lock" the Client into either Operator mode or Administrative mode. See ColorShuttle lock
