[1] A published approved example or measure used for comparison. In the printing industry there are official groups which publish standards to identify and encourage best practices to be followed for the industry. They distinguish between requirements that must be met, and descriptive information that are not requirements.

Some of these official groups are ISO, ANSI, FOGRA, IDEAlliance, and others.

Note that a standard is often a specification that has been raised to the level of a standard.
